About Caymas
Earl Bentz went to work at fourteen for his uncle's marine dealership near Charleston, South Carolina, joined the Mercury Racing Team in 1973 and took eight national titles and two world championships over the next eight years, then spent the rest of his career building boat companies in and around Ashland City, Tennessee: Stratos, then Triton, and now Caymas. He founded Caymas in September 2018 in two buildings on Highway 12 at Ashland City, a 30.3 million dollar investment with 280 jobs planned over five years, and hired the craftsmen who had built Stratos, Javelin and Triton before him. Production started in February 2019 with saltwater bay boats up to 27 feet and fiberglass bass boats up to 21, and the saltwater side has since grown into offshore center consoles in the thirties and above.
This is the youngest builder on the site and that changes what buying used means. Most secondhand Caymas boats are only a few years old and many are still inside warranty, so the first thing to establish is not the hull but the paperwork: the structural hull warranty transfers to a second owner within ten years of manufacture, and it only transfers if somebody actually does that through a dealer, so confirm it rather than assume it. The construction takes the usual center console failures off the table, because there is no wood in the boat at all, no plywood transom to rot and no wooden stringers to soak. What is left to survey is everything outboard of the laminate: engine hours and service history, the outboard mounting and transom hardware, rigging tubes and wiring, steering and hydraulics, electronics, and the trailer if one comes with it. Be realistic about the boat itself. It is heavy for its length, it wants a lot of horsepower, it burns fuel accordingly, and it is built for somebody who runs offshore rather than around the bay. Dealer coverage is nationwide and parts come from a company very much still in business, which is the easiest support situation of any builder on this list.
