About Codecasa
Codecasa is the oldest name on this list by more than a century. Giovanni Battista Codecasa started building at Viareggio in 1825 and the family still runs the yard, now in its sixth generation, from a historic dock in the Viareggio port. It builds full displacement motor yachts in steel and aluminum from roughly 30 to 90 meters, in small numbers, mostly to order, and its house style is deliberately conservative: long, low, dark hulled, plumb sheer, unmistakably a Codecasa from a distance. The current lines are the Codecasa 43, 55, 57 and 58, and the yard was still launching in 2026.
Buying a used Codecasa is buying a steel ship, and that changes everything about the process. A steel hull will last indefinitely if the coatings, the bilges and the tanks have been looked after, and it will cost a fortune if they have not, so the survey is about steel thickness readings, the tank tops, the bilge areas nobody paints, the sea chests and the cathodic protection, and it should be done by a surveyor who works on commercial tonnage rather than a yacht generalist. Classification and flag are the next question: most of these yachts carry class with an established society and an owner needs to know where the boat is in its survey cycle, because a special survey coming due is a significant number. Beyond that, older Codecasas are known for very good engineering and heavy build, and they hold their value relative to the fiberglass Italian yachts of the same size, partly because the yard is still there and still respected. For an American owner, the practical points are the usual ones magnified by size. Support, refit and warranty work live in Viareggio, and yards in Italy and the wider Mediterranean know these boats far better than yards here. The electrical system will be European specification unless the boat was built for the American market. And with a yacht of this value the import duty position, the flag, and whether the boat is set up for private or commercial use are transaction issues to settle before survey, not after.
