About Deep Impact
Deep Impact is a Miami builder of fast outboard center consoles, founded in 1998 by Armando Gomez Sr. and his son Armando Jr., and one of the yards that pushed the center console from a fishing boat into a go fast boat. It was an early user of twin stepped hulls and of triple and quadruple outboard rigs, and a lot of its boats end up as tenders to large yachts rather than as primary fishing boats. Mark Fischer bought the assets and the trademarks in 2014, rebuilt the line as Deep Impact Custom Boats with Eugene Uriarte running production, and the current range covers roughly 33 to 50 feet: the 369 and 399 in Sport and Cabin versions, the Blackwater fishing models and the 499.
Treat a used one as a custom boat, because it is. The yard builds to order, so layout, seating, hardtop, tower, tankage, electronics and above all the engine package differ boat to boat, and the engines are where the money is. On a 39 with triples, the outboards can be half the value of the boat, so hours, service history, corrosion around the transom brackets and the state of the rigging and steering matter far more than gelcoat. Stepped hulls reward correct setup and punish neglect, so check the running surface for damage and repairs and, if you can, sea trial the boat in a chop rather than flat water. Ask what the boat did with its life: a tender that lived on chocks on a megayacht has had an easy time, a poker run boat has not, and a tournament boat somewhere in between. There are two real advantages here. The builder is still in Miami, still owned by the person who bought it in 2014 and still making the same models, so parts and answers exist. And the buyer pool is local and knowledgeable, which means a well kept boat with good engines sells quickly in South Florida and a tired one sits.
