About Toy Marine
Toy Marine was founded in Savona in 2002 by Aldo Tomasina and Alessandro Novella. Tomasina came across American lobster boats on a business trip to the United States, decided the shape could be drawn better, and took the idea to Novella, who already had a yard in Savona harbor, 45 kilometers west of Genoa. The result is an American boat built the Italian way: the 1930s lobster boat and fast commuter hull form, dressed in the proportions and the finish of the Italian yards of the 1960s. The range now runs Toy 36, 36 Fly, 39 outboard, 47, 51, 51 Fly and 72. The 36 is the one that made the name: 11 meters of hull, 3.80 meter beam, eight tonnes, twin Yanmars of 320 or 370 horsepower, 26 to 28 knots cruising and about 300 miles of range.
These are small production numbers from a small yard, so a used Toy is bought on its own merits rather than on a model average, and the builder says values have held up well. What you get is a deep V hull, a low deckhouse, a big cockpit and a modest two cabin interior: a boat for running the coast and swimming off the transom, not for living aboard. For an American buyer the foreign build is the thing to think through. There are only about ten Toys in North America, spread between Florida, Maine and Canada, and no named United States dealer, so warranty and parts run back to Savona, and the yard is the only real source for hull, hardware and joinery items. Engine support is the easy part, since Yanmar and Volvo Penta are everywhere in South Florida. A boat that started life in the Mediterranean will be CE specified and almost certainly 230V 50Hz, which means a shore power conversion or an isolation transformer here, and it will need a formal customs entry with the duty paid before you can register it. Ask for that paperwork early, because on a private import it is the buyer's problem, not the seller's.
