About True North
True North began as Everett Pearson's idea of a Downeast cruiser without the Downeast weight. The TN 38 came first in 2001 and the TN 33 in 2003, both resin infused at TPI Composites in Warren, Rhode Island, with plumb bows, reverse transoms and raised helm decks that set them apart from the lobster yacht look they borrowed from. US Watercraft carried the brand on and added the twin outboard 34 in 2014. Catalina Yachts bought True North Powerboats in 2019 and trucked the molds for the 34, the 34 Outboard Express and the 38 down to its plant at Largo, Florida, where the laminate changed: solid fiberglass below the waterline and cored composite above, on new tooling for the structural grid.
Nearly every True North on the brokerage market is a Rhode Island boat from the 2000s, and that is the good news, because an infused hull from that era is lighter and stiffer than the hand laid competition it was sold against. The bad news is behind the brand rather than in the boat. Catalina, and True North with it, went to Michael Reardon's holding company in 2025, production stopped that October, a Florida court evicted the buyer from the Largo plant, and the remaining tooling and unfinished hulls were sold piecemeal at public auction in June 2026 before C & T Composites bought the two brands and announced a restart. There is therefore no continuous factory standing behind a twenty year old True North and nobody to honor a warranty on one. In practice that costs less than it sounds: these are simple boats, usually one diesel on a straight shaft with modest systems, and the parts that fail are off the shelf. Spend the survey money on the deck and house core, on the bedding at every fitting, and on the engine and its running gear, and buy the boat rather than the badge.
