What separates a good one

Power, and how recent it is. Outboards define the boat. A five-year-old hull with fresh engines is usually a better proposition than a newer hull with tired ones, because repowering is the largest cost you can face after purchase. Check the engine year, not just the hull year. They are frequently different, and the listing does not always make that obvious.

How often engines need replacing comes down to compression and the overall condition of the engine rather than hours or age on their own. A compression test as part of the survey tells you considerably more than the hour meter does.

Fuel capacity, if you intend to cross. Range is not a number you can read off a spec sheet. It comes down to how much fuel the boat carries and what the sea state does to your burn. The same hull that crosses comfortably on a flat day will not on a rough one. Start with tankage, then ask what the boat actually burns at cruise, and keep a real reserve for conditions rather than a theoretical one.

Layout for the actual use. A tournament-rigged boat with a full-height leaning post and rocket launchers is a different boat from the same hull with forward seating and a head. Both are called center consoles. Decide which one you are buying before you compare prices.

How we compare boats

When we shortlist vessels for a client, three things drive the comparison before anything else: the newest year available within the budget, the highest horsepower offered for that model, and the lowest engine hours for the age. Condition, service history and where the boat is lying come next. It is a deliberately blunt first filter, and it is how a long list becomes a short one.
