What the flybridge actually buys you

A second living space. The practical value is not the helm, it is the deck. Seating, shade, a grill and a view, usually the best space on the boat on a Florida evening.

Visibility. Docking and navigating in traffic is easier from height, and judging depth over a flat is easier still.

Interior volume below. Because the upper helm takes the deck space, the main deck can be given over to a saloon and galley rather than a helm station.

Stability is not the concern buyers sometimes expect. These boats are designed around the upper deck rather than having it added to them, so carrying the weight aloft is engineered in from the start. It is not something to weigh when comparing a flybridge against an express of the same length. The difference between them is layout and helm position, not seaworthiness.

Air draft is not a constraint here

Buyers arriving from markets with fixed bridges often assume a flybridge limits where they can go. In Fort Lauderdale it does not. The bridges on the New River are drawbridges and open on request, so height does not restrict what you can bring up the river.

Depth is similarly generous. Marinas carry eight feet or more, the Intracoastal has excellent navigational depth, and canals behind private homes typically run six to eight. There are shallower pockets, so it is worth confirming a specific dock, and that is a question we can answer for any address.

Crew

Most flybridge yachts sit in the range where crewing becomes a real cost. From fifty to seventy feet a captain-only arrangement is typical. From seventy to a hundred feet the minimum is a captain and a mate. Budget roughly twelve hundred dollars per foot of length per year for a full-time captain.

How we compare boats

When we shortlist vessels for a client, three things drive the comparison before anything else: the newest year available within the budget, the highest horsepower offered for that model, and the lowest engine hours for the age. Condition, refit history and where the boat is lying come next.

Frequently asked questions

What is a flybridge yacht? A motor yacht with a second helm station on a deck above the main saloon, usually with additional seating and shade. Most motor yachts over fifty-five feet have one.

Does a flybridge limit where I can go in Fort Lauderdale? No. The New River bridges open on request, so air draft is not the constraint here that it is in some other markets.

Flybridge or motor yacht, are they the same thing? A flybridge is a feature, not a class. Most motor yachts above fifty-five feet have one, so the categories overlap heavily. Search both.
