About Albemarle

Scott Harrell Sr. started Scott Boat Works at Edenton, North Carolina in 1977 and the first Albemarle followed in 1978. The 24 came in 1979, the 21 in 1980, the 27 in 1984 and the jackshaft drive system in 1986, and his son J. Scott Harrell Jr. took over as president in 1990. Ownership has changed three times since: Brunswick in 2005, Scott McLaughlin in 2009, and Murphy Alternative Investments in 2015, which brought Albemarle together with Carolina Classic. The boats are still built at Edenton on Albemarle Sound, and the current line runs from the 27 Dual Console up to the 45 Carolinian Fisharound and the 53 Spencer Edition.

Albemarle has never chased fashion. As Marlin put it, the yard has historically built slightly heavier than average solid fiberglass boats, with bow flare, sharp entries, reasonably deep vees and the stability you need running Oregon and Hatteras inlets. That is the case for one second hand: a heavy inboard express is out of step with the outboard center consoles that have taken over the market, so prices are sensible for the amount of boat, and the hulls were built for water that punishes light ones. Most brokerage Albemarles are diesel inboards, so the engine survey and the running gear decide the deal. On the older boats ask when the fuel tanks were last inspected and get the deck core checked around fittings.

Status
In production · owned by Murphy Alternative Investments since 2015
Construction
Solid fiberglass hulls, with composite coring above the waterline on the later models
Builds
Express sportfishing boats, Dual consoles, Carolina style fisharound express boats
Worth knowing
Albemarle introduced its jackshaft propulsion system in 1986. The 410 was the first model to use composite coring above the waterline, which took about 1,500 pounds out of the boat and improved its center of gravity.
