About Albin
Albin started in Kristinehamn, Sweden in 1899 building marine engines and became a boatbuilder much later: its own fiberglass boats from 1964, the Vega 27 from 1965 of which about 3,450 were built, then the Ballad 30. The Swedish company went bankrupt in 1982, but by then the name had crossed the Atlantic. Albin entered the US market in 1966 from Cos Cob, Connecticut, thousands of Albin trawlers were built in Taiwan through the 1980s, and from 1993 the Tournament Express range gave the brand a second life. Albin was sold to Bladen Composites in the 2008 crash and Bladen closed in 2009.
Two very different sets of boats carry the name. The Swedish sailboats, mostly Vegas and Ballads, are small, strongly built 1970s cruisers with devoted followings. The American power boats are what most buyers mean: the 25 and 27 pocket trawlers, the Taiwan built 36, and the 28, 31 and 35 Tournament Express, diesel boats admired for a seakindly ride and modest fuel burn rather than speed. There is no factory, so parts come from the Albin Owners Group and the used market.
