About Amel

Henri Amel was a French engineer and a Resistance fighter who founded his yard at La Rochelle in 1965, aged fifty, and kept working until he died at ninety. He built for one customer: the couple who intend to cross oceans without a crew. Everything follows from that: watertight bulkheads, electric furling on everything, a hard dodger, an integrated bow thruster, and systems laid out so one person can reach them at sea.

The 53-foot Super Maramu is the boat that made the name, close to five hundred hulls of it, and the Super Maramu 2000 took Cruising World's Boat of the Year. More than two thousand Amels have been built and the current 50 and 60 are sloops rather than ketches but built to the same brief. Owners are famously devoted and the boats are almost never neglected, which on the used market means you are usually buying somebody's carefully kept circumnavigator rather than a project.
