About Bayliner
Bayliner was founded by Orin Edson in 1957 and became the biggest boatbuilder on earth by doing one thing relentlessly: taking cost out without taking the boat away. Edson sold to Brunswick in 1986 for $425 million, which made Brunswick the largest pleasure-boat producer in the world, and he remains the only self-made billionaire the industry has produced.
The modern range is small runabouts and deck boats, but the 1980s and 1990s brought Bayliner motor yachts up to the high fifties, and those are what turn up on the brokerage market at forty feet and above. Be clear-eyed about them: they were built to a price, and a thirty-year-old boat built to a price rewards a hard survey. Stringers, transom, fuel tanks and the wiring are where the money hides. A good one, properly maintained, is a great deal of space for very little money; a bad one is a project.
