About Beneteau
Beneteau traces its start to 1884, when shipwright Benjamin Bénéteau began building fishing boats at Croix-de-Vie on France's Atlantic coast. In the 1960s his grandchildren moved the business into fiberglass pleasure boats, and the First performance sailboats followed in 1976. The brand is now part of Groupe Beneteau, which also owns Jeanneau and Lagoon.
Beneteau builds both sail and power. The Oceanis cruisers, introduced in 1986, and the First range are its main sailboat lines, while the power side includes the Swift Trawler, Gran Turismo express cruisers and the smaller Antares and Flyer boats. Because Oceanis models are designed for charter as well as private use, it is worth confirming whether a particular used boat has a charter history. Some US-market boats were built at the company's Marion, South Carolina plant before it closed in 2020.
