BRABUS Marine is a German badge on a Finnish boat. Bodo Buschmann, who founded the car tuner BRABUS, bought himself an Axopar 37, had it finished in gunmetal gray in his own house style as a tender, and then went to Axopar with the idea of doing it properly. Axopar Boats and BRABUS GmbH set the venture up in 2017 and the Shadow 800 followed, a limited run of twenty. Everything since has been built the same way: a BRABUS Shadow is an Axopar platform, laminated and assembled in Axopar's Polish factories at Słupsk and Augustów, with its own deck, hull finish, upholstery, hardware and engine package. The number in the name is the horsepower. The current range is the Shadow 38, on the Axopar 37 platform, and the Shadow 45.

Second hand, the question to settle is what the badge is worth to you, because underneath it is an Axopar, and an Axopar of the same age and size sells for a good deal less. What the money buys is the finish, the deck and cabin options, the seating, the paint and usually more outboard power. The rest of the news is good for an American owner. These are outboard boats, almost always Mercury, so repowering and service are ordinary transactions in South Florida rather than a shipping exercise, and there is a proper United States dealer network: Nautical Ventures in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Stuart and elsewhere in Florida handles the brand and brought the Shadow 800 into the country. A boat sold new through that channel arrived with duty paid and specified for American use. A boat bought privately in Europe is a different matter: it will be CE specified, you will need the customs entry proving duty was paid, and although a 38 foot outboard day boat runs mostly on 12 volts, you should still check the battery charger, the shore inlet and any air conditioning for 230V 50Hz wiring before you plug it in at a Florida dock.
