Bruckmann is a family name before it is a brand. Erich Bruckmann was one of the founding partners of C&C Yachts in 1969 and ran its custom shop from the early 1960s to the late 1980s, turning out roughly 200 custom and semi custom boats including the balsa cored Red Jacket. His son Mark started his own version of the business around 1986 at the age of 24, first at Oakville and then in a 25,000 square foot former steel warehouse in Mississauga, Ontario. The output was small and deliberate: the Bluestar 29 and 36, the Mark Ellis designed Abaco 35, 40 and 47 downeast cruisers, custom sailing yachts, and the Bruckmann 50 motorsailer. Hulls are hand laid in vinylester and polyester over E-glass and Corecell, with plywood framing tabbed in and cabinetry done the old way. The shop was known for its joinery.

Mark Bruckmann finished his last boat in July 2025 and retired the Ontario shop and its crew that August, after a working life of 55 years in boatbuilding. In June 2026 Niche Watercraft bought the brand, the molds and the production rights, renamed the line Bruckmann + Ellis in honor of Mark Ellis, and began moving production to the United States east coast with the first American boats targeted for spring 2027. Niche Watercraft has taken on warranty and service responsibility, and Mark Bruckmann stays on as a contract advisor so the build knowledge transfers, which is a better outcome than most brands get when a founder retires. For an American buyer of an existing Canadian built boat the practical points are short: ask for the customs entry to see whether duty was paid on import, and expect North American 120 and 240 volt 60 hertz systems, so unlike a European import there is normally nothing electrical to convert. Then treat it as the one off it is. Every hull is low volume and hand finished, so the build file, the original owner's specification and the survey tell you far more than the model name does.
