About Caliber
George and Michael McCreary built their first boat in a garage and founded Caliber Yachts in 1980, then moved into their own plant at Clearwater, Florida. The line grew from the Caliber 28 through the 33, 38 and 40 into the Long Range Cruiser series: the 35 LRC in 1993, the 40 LRC in 1995 and the 47 LRC in 1999. Production ran to 2010 and produced roughly 500 to 600 hulls in all, which is a small number spread over thirty years and tells you what kind of yard it was. Nothing new has been built since, and George McCreary now sells used ones through Caliber Brokers.
These are heavy, conservative cruising boats and the market values them for exactly that. Solid hand laid glass in the hull, a plywood cored deck, the Quad Seal hull to deck joint, a skeg supported rudder and a lot of tankage: the LRC boats in particular were drawn for a couple crossing oceans rather than for club racing, so expect stability and load carrying, not speed. Because Caliber built nothing exotic, the systems on board are ordinary marine gear you can still buy, and the absence of a factory matters far less here than it would on a complex production yacht. Survey the things age rather than the brand: standing rigging and chainplate age, deck core around fittings and stanchion bases, the rudder bearings, and the tanks. Ask for the original build record, because for these hulls one usually exists.
