About C&C

C&C was formed on 26 September 1969 when four Ontario businesses merged under one holding company: George Hinterhoeller's yard, Belleville Marine Yard, Erich Bruckmann's shop, and the design office of Cuthbertson & Cassian, whose partners George Cuthbertson and George Cassian gave the company its name. Around 7,000 boats followed in the first 17 years, from 21 to 67 feet, plus the Landfall cruising line from 35 to 48 feet, and at its peak C&C held about half the Canadian sailboat market and a fifth of the American one. The 27, the 30 and the 35 are the hulls you meet most often on brokerage.

A fire at the Niagara-on-the-Lake plant in April 1994 destroyed the production line and most of the tooling, records and plans, along with 40 molds and three C&C 51s under construction. Insurance covered only part of it and the company did not restart. The name and the surviving molds went to Fairport Marine, owner of Tartan, in the late 1990s, and Tim Jackett drew a new generation of C&Cs in Ohio. US Watercraft bought the rights in 2013, entered receivership in July 2017 and had ceased operations by summer 2018, so no factory stands behind the name now. That matters less than it sounds, because the boats are numerous, the class associations are active and most of the hardware is standard chandlery, but the original drawings largely burned, so a C&C is bought on survey. Look hard at the balsa core around every deck fitting, at the chainplates and the bulkheads they land on, and at the age of the original tanks.
