Custom Carolina is not a builder, and a listing carrying that name is not from a factory. It is how the market labels a one-off sportfisherman built in the North Carolina tradition - most of them from Wanchese, eight miles from the fleet at Oregon Inlet, and from the yards along that coast: Jarrett Bay, Paul Spencer, Ricky Scarborough, Paul Mann and others, each building a handful of boats a year to their own hand.

What they share is the Carolina flare that Omie Tillett is credited with championing - a sharp entry arcing hard out to the deck, which throws spray down and lifts the bow in the short steep sea off Hatteras - and cold-moulded construction, wood and epoxy, which is light, strong and entirely dependent on how well it was done and how it has been kept. Buying one is buying a specific boat by a specific builder, not a model. Get a surveyor who knows cold-moulded hulls and who knows that yard's work; the difference between two boats of the same length and year can be enormous.
