About Eastern
Carmen Carbone started Eastern in 1981 at East Rochester, New Hampshire, building one boat, an 18 footer drawn by Royal Lowell, the designer more responsible than anyone for the look of a Maine lobster boat. A 22 and a 27 followed within ten years. Bob Bourdeau, an employee, bought the company in 1993 and moved it to Milton after fire destroyed the original shop, then spent a quarter of a century adding to it: the Royal Lowell drawn JC 31 and JC 35 molds in 1994, Seaway of Maine in 2009, the Sisu 22 molds in 2011, Rosborough of Nova Scotia in 2012. Greg Hopkins bought the business in 2019.
These are small, plain, outboard powered Downeast boats, and on the used market they do a job that expensive downeast cruisers do not: a working hull shape, a dry ride and an engine you can unbolt, at a price a first boat buyer can carry. The buying point most people miss is the acquisitions. Seaway, Sisu, JC and Rosborough would all be orphan brands by now, with no molds and nobody to call, and instead they sit in one shop in New Hampshire that still has the tooling and still builds them. If you are looking at any of those names, the parts question has an answer. Peak production was 117 boats in 2007, so the fleet is not large, and most of it stayed in New England.

- Eastern began in 1981 at East Rochester, New Hampshire with a single model, an 18 foot Classic drawn by the Downeast designer Royal Lowell. It now builds 21 outboard models from 18 to 27 feet across three names, Eastern, Rosborough and Seaway, with 47 people in 30,000 square feet.
