About Egg Harbor

Egg Harbor started in 1946 when Russell Post and John Leek built a 28 foot carvel planked skiff in New Jersey, Post having sold his car to pay for the cedar, with Phil Boyd and Harold Care joining soon after. The partners scattered and founded most of the South Jersey sportfishing industry between them: Leek left in 1948 and started Pacemaker with his brother Cecil, and Post left in 1957 to build Posts at Mays Landing. Egg Harbor stayed at Egg Harbor City, went from cedar on oak to fiberglass in the 1970s, and built convertibles and sport yachts from about 33 to 60 feet.

The company filed Chapter 11 in 1990, restarted in 1992 and closed in 1997. Dr. Ira Trocki, a New Jersey surgeon who had wanted an Egg since childhood, bought it in 1999, put more than $10 million into the plant and collected Predator, Topaz, Buddy Davis and, in July 2012, Silverton and Ovation, all to be built at Egg Harbor City. Production has since stopped and the brand is inactive, so every Egg Harbor is a used boat and there is no factory to call for a part. The newer end of the market is 37 to 50 foot sport yachts from roughly 2001 to 2008, and below that sits a long tail of 1970s to 1990s convertibles. Records matter more than cosmetics here: buy the boat with a known yard history, and have the stringers, tanks and the deck core checked before the engines.

Worth knowing
The first Egg Harbor was a 28 foot cedar skiff launched in 1946 and bought by the mayor of Egg Harbor City for $3,000. The 37 foot convertible that George Stadel drew in the early 1960s stayed in the line, largely unchanged, for more than 40 years.
