About Gunboat
Peter Johnstone, of the J/Boats family, had Morrelli & Melvin draw a 62-foot performance catamaran in 2001, built it in Cape Town, and founded Gunboat in 2002 to build more. Nobody had really done it before: the speed of a racing multihull with an interior you could actually cruise in. Carbon throughout, because weight is the whole argument, and the boats routinely sail faster than the true wind.
The company went into bankruptcy at the end of 2015 and was taken over in 2016 by Grand Large Yachting, with production now in the south of France at La Grande-Motte. The early South African and North Carolina boats and the current French ones are quite different animals, so establish which yard built her. A Gunboat is a serious commitment (carbon rigs and daggerboards want specialists), but nothing else does what they do.
