About Island Packet
Bob Johnson took a naval architecture degree from MIT in 1967, ran design and production at Irwin Yachts, and started Island Packet at Largo, Florida, in 1979. The idea was a cruising boat that put comfort and seaworthiness ahead of a rating certificate: shallow draft so the Bahamas and the Keys are open to you, enormous tankage and stowage, and the Full Foil Keel he developed (long, shallow and integral), which tracks like a full keel without the wetted surface.
Seven Cruising World Boat of the Year awards and three from SAIL followed. Darrell and Leslie Allen took over in 2017, and the company still builds at Largo with many of the same craftsmen. Boats run 35 to 52 feet. They are not fast and they are not trying to be; what they are is a genuinely capable cruising yacht that two people can handle, and the owners' network around them is one of the best in sailing.
