About Jarrett Bay
Jarrett Bay builds its own hulls, in Beaufort, North Carolina, and that is the first thing to know about the name. Randy Ramsey and fellow charter captain Jim Luxton started in 1986 in a rented shed on Jarrett Bay with a dirt floor and a leaking roof, and the boats are still built in house: cold molded, marine plywood and fiberglass set in epoxy in place of the juniper planking and galvanized fastenings the old Carolina yards used, with vacuum bagging, CNC cut parts and carbon fiber added as the hulls grew. Ramsey sold his charter boat in 1993 to build full time and moved to Beaufort in 1998, where the yard now sits on 35 acres inside the 175 acre Jarrett Bay Marine Park. Safe Harbor Marinas bought the boatworks in 2022 and Ramsey stayed on, with Safe Harbor saying it wanted the company kept together and the building continued.
There is no model list to shop from. Every Jarrett Bay is a one of a kind boat built to an owner's brief, so you are buying a specific hull number by a specific crew in a specific year, not a model year. The good news for a used buyer is unusual continuity: the yard is still there, still building, and still services boats it built decades ago, which is not true of most custom sportfish names. Cold molded construction is light, strong and stiff, and it is also entirely a function of how well it was done and how well it has been kept dry, so use a surveyor who knows wood epoxy hulls and who has seen Jarrett Bay's work. Look hard at the fuel tanks, the coring at deck penetrations, any repaired impact damage, and the refit history, because these boats are repowered and rebuilt rather than replaced. Ask the yard about the hull: on a boat like this the build file is worth more than the listing photos.
