Legacy Yachts for Sale

Legacy was the powerboat side of Freedom Yachts, the Rhode Island sailboat builder. The first boat, launched in 1991, was a 40 footer based on a Canadian built downeast design by Mark Ellis, followed by the 34 Express in 1994, a 28 in 1999 and eventually a 52. They were built at Portsmouth, Rhode Island for owners who wanted the look of a Maine lobster yacht with a modern cored hull under it. Tartan bought the brand in 2010 and moved the 32 and 42 molds to Fairport, Ohio, and the name is now owned by MMG and built at the Northern Marine yard in Anacortes, Washington.

These are quiet, economical semi displacement cruisers: 17 degrees of deadrise at the transom, a full length skeg, and a single diesel that will cruise near 17 knots, or twins for a little more. With so few built, the individual boat's history matters more than the model year. Look hard at moisture in the cored hull and decks, and at the varnish and painted topsides, which are the expensive part of keeping one smart. No continuous factory stands behind the early hulls, so a surveyor who knows cored construction is worth more here than a dealer.
