About Luhrs
The Luhrs family were building boats at Morgan, New Jersey in the 1930s, where Henry Luhrs Sea Skiffs turned out lapstrake skiffs by the thousand before the conglomerate Bangor Punta bought it in 1965. Warren and John Luhrs reclaimed the family name in the 1980s and put the Luhrs sportfish line into production at St. Augustine, Florida from 1986, alongside their Silverton, Mainship and Hunter brands. The powerboat companies stopped building in January 2012, the group filed for Chapter 11 that April, and a Florida investment firm bought the Luhrs name that November.
What that means for a buyer is simple: there is no factory behind the boat. Luhrs sold hard on value, a diesel convertible or express for less than a Bertram or a Viking, and the brokerage market still reflects that. The hulls are conventional and the engines are ordinary marine diesels supported by their own makers, so running gear is rarely the problem. The factory specific pieces are the issue: hatches, glass, trim, helm moldings and switch panels now come from the aftermarket or from another boat. Budget for that, check the fuel tanks and the wiring, and these remain a lot of fishing boat for the money.
