About Maiora

Maiora is a Viareggio name that goes back to 1970 and was an early Italian builder of large fiberglass motor yachts. The Fipa yard took the brand over in 1985 and built it into the flybridge line most people recognize, running roughly 80 to 130 feet through the 1990s and 2000s, with Glory Bee, a 97 footer delivered in 1991, as the boat that opened up the big end. Fipa itself failed and in 2021 both Maiora and its sister brand AB Yachts went to Next Yacht Group, which now builds from Viareggio and Massa with the M30, M36 and M38 and the Exuma explorer models.

On the used market Maioras are generally 1990s and 2000s Fipa boats, and they are a lot of yacht for the money. That is the appeal and it is also the warning. They were built in an Italian tradition of high gloss joinery, marble, big sunbeds and generous volume on a semi displacement hull, and they were specified by their first owners, so no two are quite alike below deck. What you are buying is a twenty to thirty year old large motor yacht, which means the survey is about systems, not style: main engines and generators and their hours, the gearboxes and shafts, stabilizers, the air conditioning, teak decks and the fastenings under them, tenders and davits, and above all the wiring and the electronics, which on a yacht of this age will have been layered over several times. Assume that anything cosmetic looks better than the mechanical picture behind it. For an American owner the practical issues are Italian. The yard is at Viareggio, the brand has changed hands twice and Next Yacht Group has no obligation for a Fipa era hull, so factory warranty is not part of the conversation and parts for older boats come from Italy on Italian lead times. Check whether the boat is on European 230 volt 50 hertz systems or was built or converted for 120 and 240 volt 60 hertz, because on a yacht this size that affects every appliance aboard, and establish where the boat has been flagged, whether import duty into the United States has been paid, and whether it has been run privately or in charter.
