About Maxum
Brunswick created Maxum in 1988, two years after buying both Bayliner and Sea Ray, to fill the gap between them. The engineering showed it: Maxum hulls were largely shared with Bayliner, with different decks, interiors and trim to lift the boat upmarket, and the range ran from about 17 to 42 feet. Runabouts came out of Pipestone, Minnesota and the cruisers out of Salisbury, Maryland.
Brunswick killed the brand in August 2009, the fifth line it dropped in a year, so everything on the market is at least seventeen years old. The Bayliner connection is the good news: hulls and running gear were shared across Brunswick's volume brands and Mercruiser power was near universal, so mechanical parts are cheap and easy. What is hard is anything Maxum specific, upholstery, canvas and trim, which now comes from the used market or a trimmer. These were boats built to a price, so budget for a real survey of stringers, transom, tank and wiring.
