About Monk
Monk is a model line rather than a conventional shipyard. Ed Monk Jr., son of the naval architect Ed Monk Sr., drew a 36 foot semi displacement trawler with a full keel, a protected propeller and rudder, a tall flared bow and high freeboard with molded spray rails. Building started in Taiwan in the early 1980s, with North Sea Yachts of New Jersey as the importer, and moved to a yard in Nova Scotia in 1992 to get better control of the fiberglass layup after demand outran quality. The last hull, number 258, went out as a 2008 model. Early boats ran a single 120 to 135 horsepower diesel at about 7 knots and 5 gallons an hour. Later ones took a 220 horsepower Cummins and cruise at 9 to 10 knots.
Buying one second hand is really a choice between two eras. The Taiwan boats are the cheaper way in, but the layup was the reason production moved, so they reward a surveyor who knows 1980s Taiwanese glass work and who will read moisture in the decks and around the fittings. The Nova Scotia boats are the ones owners tend to chase. Either way this is a teak heavy boat inside and often outside, so the joinery and any teak deck decide the refit budget. There is no factory and no warranty to inherit: the owners' association and the brokerage market are the support network, and they are unusually good ones. On the import question there is less to worry about than the foreign build suggests, because these were brought into North America new through an American importer and sold to American owners, so there is normally no 50 hertz electrical system to convert and the duty was settled decades ago. Confirm both on any boat that has spent its life outside the United States.
