About Monterey
Monterey was started in 1985 by brothers Charles and Jeff Marshall with five employees, two dealers and two 19 foot models. Fire destroyed the main plant in 1999 and the company was building again inside a year. It now runs two plants on 80 acres beside Williston Airport in north central Florida with more than 600 boatbuilders, and both brothers are still co chairmen, which is rare among volume builders.
The range is roughly 19 to 40 feet: sport boats, surf models, outboard console boats and the larger M Series sport yachts, so what reaches the brokerage market is a day boat or a weekender rather than a liveaboard. Monterey's reputation rests on finish and fit, a step above the mass market brands of the same length, and used prices follow, so expect to pay more than for a comparable Bayliner of the same year. These are almost all sterndrive or outboard, so the drive and its service record matter more than the hull.
