About Sabre
Roger Hewson founded Sabre Yachts in 1970 in Raymond, Maine, well inland from the coast, to build production sailboats. His own design, the Sabre 28, was introduced at the 1971 Newport Boat Show and stayed in production for about 15 years. Sabre added its first powerboat, the Sabre 36 fast trawler, in 1988 and built its last sailboat in 2013. Daniel Zilkha has invested in and led the company since the early 1990s, and sister brand Back Cove Yachts was set up in 2003.
Today Sabre builds only motor yachts, mainly its Salon Express models from about 38 to 58 feet, with downeast styling and resin-infused construction. On the used market, buyers will find both older Sabre sailboats and the power models. Sabre builds in modest numbers, so a well-kept example of a particular model can take some time to find.
