About Sunpower Yachts
Sunpower Yachts International is an Australian company, run from Surfers Paradise in Queensland and building solar electric catamarans since 2018. The range now runs from the Solar-E 40 and 44 up through the Solar-E 60, 78 and 90 to design studies for solar and hydrogen boats of 120 and 137 feet, plus the Solar-E 72 and 82 sailing cats and a set of electric inflatable tenders. Production is split: the 40 and 44 are being built in Thailand, and the larger Alva derived models come from the Antalya shipyard in Turkey that Sunpower acquired with Alva Yachts in 2025. The sales pitch is a boat that covers up to about 100 kilometers a day on sun alone and runs indefinitely at 4 to 6 knots, with the battery bank also carrying refrigeration, cooking, the water maker and the air conditioning.
This is a young brand and a used one needs buying with open eyes. There is barely any resale history, so there is no established depreciation curve to argue from, and the company has just absorbed another builder, so get warranty terms in writing and find out specifically who honors the battery and the propulsion warranty now and for how long. For an American buyer the electrical question is not a detail, it is the boat. These are built offshore to European practice, which normally means 230 volt 50 hertz house systems, while Florida docks supply 120 and 240 volt at 60 hertz, so confirm the charger, inverter and shore power specification on the exact hull before you buy rather than after. Sunpower keeps a sales office at West Palm Beach, which helps, but ask what service coverage that office actually carries for a high voltage system. Finally, ask for the customs entry: a Thai or Turkish built boat arriving in the United States owes duty unless it has already been paid, and that is a number, not a formality.
