About Tollycraft
Robert Merland Tollefson, Tolly to everyone, was running a millwork plant in Kelso, Washington when it burned. He started Tollycraft with eight employees building plywood runabouts, moved to fiberglass in 1962, and spent three decades building the motor yachts the Pacific Northwest is still full of, designed by Ed Monk Sr. and then his son Ed Monk Jr. Tolly sold in 1987 at 76, the new owners went bankrupt in 1993, and the business closed around 1997.
About 6,500 boats were built, roughly 3,500 of them yachts from 26 to 65 feet, and they are bought today for their hulls and their layouts: solid hand laid fiberglass, no structural failures of note across the fleet, and cabin plans that put the galley and saloon where a cruising couple wants them. The 34, 37, 40 and 44 come up regularly, the 61 and 65 rarely. There has been no factory for nearly thirty years, but the Northwest owners' clubs are active and are the first place to go for parts and advice.
