About Chris-Craft
Chris-Craft dates its heritage to 1874, when Christopher Columbus Smith built his first wooden boat in Algonac, Michigan, at the age of 13. The business took the Chris-Craft name in 1924 and became one of the first to mass-produce pleasure boats, bringing mahogany runabouts within reach of many more buyers. The Smith family sold the company in 1960, and it passed through several owners before Winnebago Industries bought it from Stellican in 2018.
Today Chris-Craft builds fiberglass boats in Sarasota, Florida, with styling that draws on its wooden-boat past: the Launch and Launch GT runabouts, Sportster bowriders, Calypso dual consoles and Catalina center consoles. On the used market, buyers will see both these modern boats and much older classics. The two are very different purchases, and vintage wooden or early fiberglass boats call for a surveyor with specific experience.
