Focus Motor Yachts is a small Dutch builder at Wanssum in Limburg, founded by Matjaz Avsic, who came to it from charter, service and refit rather than from production boatbuilding. The range is roughly 33 to 55 feet and splits into three families: the Forza line, the Power line, the newer X line, plus custom tenders. Tony Castro has drawn all of them, and the yard builds semi custom, laminating by hand and double laminating the structural joints, with certification through the International Marine Certification Institute rather than to the minimum of the European recreational craft directive. Hulls are deep vee and fast: the Power 36 leaves the yard on twin Mercury diesels and will run to 50 knots.

This is about as European as a boat gets, which is the thing to think about before buying one in Florida. Expect a CE plate rather than an NMMA certificate, 230 volt 50 hertz shore power, metric plumbing and European electronics, and check the engines carefully, because a twin Mercury diesel package is well supported in the United States but is not the Volvo or Cummins installation your local yard sees every week. There is no Focus factory service base in the United States, so service falls to an independent yard and parts come from the Netherlands. Confirm with the broker that duty was paid when the boat entered the country, and ask whether the shore power was converted or whether you will be buying an isolation transformer. Against that, these are hand built boats in small numbers with a designer's name on them, so a used one is a different proposition from a production cruiser of the same length, and worth the extra homework if the boat suits you.
