Tony Smith built folding Telstar trimarans in England before moving his family to Annapolis, Maryland. A fire destroyed the Telstar molds in 1981, and the catamaran he built next, the Phoenix, became the first Gemini. The line ran for four decades: the Gemini 3000 from 1983 to 1990 at 153 hulls, the 3200 from 1990 to 1993 at 99, the 3400 from 1993 with the first lifting underhung rudder system, then the 105M and the 105Mc through 2010, the Legacy 35 from 2013 and finally the Freestyle 37 and the Freestyle 399 power catamaran. The Catamaran Company bought the assets out of insolvency in 2009, Hunter and then Marlow Hunter built the boats at Alachua, Florida from 2010, and in September 2014 production moved again to the Catalina Yachts plant at Largo. It has not run since the pandemic.

What sells a Gemini second hand is the shape of it. A 14 foot beam fits an ordinary monohull slip and the Intracoastal, the boards and kick up rudders give shoal draft, and a single diesel keeps running and docking costs closer to a monohull than to a big charter catamaran. That suits a couple cruising Florida and the Bahamas, and it suits an owner who wants a catamaran without catamaran dockage bills. It is not a performance boat and it is not an ocean crossing boat, and buyers who want either are disappointed. On survey, look hard at the centerboard trunks and the board and rudder lifting gear, at the single engine and its sail drive, and at bulkhead tabbing on the older hulls. Being American built is worth money here: there is no 50 hertz system to convert and no import duty to settle, unlike an imported catamaran of the same size. There is no production line to call, so parts and knowledge come from the owner network and the brokerage market.
