About Jefferson
Leon Shaw sold boats before he built them: Kentuckiana Yacht Sales in downtown Jeffersonville, Indiana, distributing Chung Hwa out of Taiwan. Jefferson followed in 1982, designed in Indiana and built by the Liu family at Hershine Marine in Taiwan, and by 1990 the company was bringing a dozen models to market at once - the Viscount sundeck, the Marlago, the Rivanna, the Marquessa.
The proposition was space and range for the money: wide sundecks, three staterooms in a 52-footer, and displacement or semi-displacement hulls meant for long slow passages rather than for getting anywhere quickly. The company went under in 2012, so everything is brokerage and the youngest boats are now well over a decade old. They are honest value if the survey is clean - pay particular attention to the teak decks, the window frames and any sign of water in the coring.
