President Boat International was started in 1968 by Eddie Yeh and builds at Jiangjun Boat Harbor in Tainan City, on the southwest coast of Taiwan. The first product was the President 41 Sun Deck and the yard puts its total at about 1,200 yachts since, built by around 150 craftsmen, engineers and designers with a slipway on site so every boat is launched where it was built. It has worked to Nippon Kaiji Kyokai class for Japan and to Bureau Veritas and RINA for Europe, and in later years took on larger custom work, including a 66 foot expedition yacht drawn by Ted Hood and tri deck motor yachts past 100 feet.

Two quite different Presidents reach the brokerage market. The 1980s and 1990s sundeck motor yachts and aft cabin cruisers, roughly 37 to 48 feet, are the teak lined Taiwanese boats that American importers sold by the hundred: heavy, roomy, undemanding and inexpensive to buy, though the teak decks, the window frames and the original wiring are where the money goes. Above them sit the later custom builds, largely one offs to an owner's brief. For an American buyer the practical points are these. President sold into the United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and China, so check which market the boat was specified for and confirm the shore power and generator frequency, because a European or Japanese delivery is not going to be 120V 60Hz. There is no factory dealer network in the United States and never has been: representation has run through individual agents such as Peter Kehoe and Associates on the East Coast. The company's own website has since gone off line, so treat parts and drawings as something you source from the general marine trade, the original importer or other owners. And on any boat brought in privately from abroad, ask to see the customs entry showing the duty was paid before you sign.
