About Regulator
Joan and Owen Maxwell were twenty-eight and thirty when they started Regulator in an abandoned A&P grocery store in Edenton, North Carolina, in 1988. They built a full-scale model of the first boat, the Regulator 26, by hand and tested it themselves until it was right. Lou Codega drew it at night and on weekends while working for the Navy's small-boat design group, and he has drawn every Regulator since.
That continuity is the brand. Codega (Webb Institute and MIT, a registered professional engineer) designs a deep-V that stays sharp aft, and Regulator commits to it: the boats are heavier and wetter-riding through a chop than most competitors and considerably drier over the top of one. Twenty-three to forty-one feet, all outboard. Owners keep them a long time and the used market is thin and firm, which tells you what you need to know.
