About Sabreline

Sabreline is not a separate builder. It is the badge Sabre Yachts put on its powerboats for the first generation of them, and Sabre has its own profile in this directory, so the short version is what matters here: Roger Hewson's sailboat company at Raymond and South Casco, Maine, went into powerboats in 1989 with the Sabreline 36, a tri cabin boat it called a fast trawler because it had trawler accommodation and better than trawler speed. The 34 Flybridge Sedan followed in 1990, the 43 and 47 Aft Cabin Motoryachts in 1994 and the 36 Express in 1996, and over nearly two decades the fast trawler line ran from 34 to 52 feet. Sabre's motor yachts today carry only the Sabre name, so a boat badged Sabreline is from that earlier era and some listings split the difference and write Sabre Sabreline.

These are Maine built inboard diesel boats bought by people who keep them, which is the first thing to understand about the market: they turn over slowly, they are usually well maintained, and they are usually found east of the Mississippi. The 36 is much the most common, typically twin diesels of 250 to 325 horsepower, cruising in the mid teens and topping out around 20 knots, burning 10 to 12 gallons an hour. The unusual advantage here is that the company that built your boat is still open, still in Maine and still building motor yachts, which is not true of most discontinued lines: you will not get a warranty and Sabre does not carry Sabreline model parts on a shelf, but the institutional knowledge is a phone call away and the dealers who sold them, in Maine and the mid Atlantic, still service them. On survey treat it as any thirty year old Downeast inboard: the deck and house core, the bedding at every fitting, the fuel tanks, the age of the wiring and the steering, and the diesels and running gear, which decide the deal.
