Sailfish has been built at Cairo, Georgia since Paul Hoppes Jr. started it in 1986, and for most of that time it was, in the founder's own phrase, the best kept secret in the marine industry: a solid regional fishing boat brand that people outside the Southeast rarely saw. Georgia Oak Partners came in as a partner in 2017, Hoppes retired in 2020, the Cairo plant was expanded in 2021 and the company recapitalized in 2022, and the line is now sold nationally and abroad. The range is center consoles and dual consoles from roughly 22 to 36 feet, built on the Variable Degree Stepped hull, which runs three deadrise zones in one bottom, and laid up wood free with quad axial glass, Kevlar at the stress points, a foam transom and aluminum backing plates behind the hardware.

On the used market this is one of the more sensible buys in the mid price fishing boat class: a boat that fishes and rides better than its money, from a company that is still open. The wood free laminate matters when you are looking at a boat ten or fifteen years old, because the rot that kills boats of that age in this size range is mostly transom and stringer, and these were not built with wood there. Spend the survey time instead on deck core around the console, leaning post and hardtop legs, on hardware bedding, and on the fuel tank and its compartment. As with everything in this class the outboards set the price, so check hours, service records and remaining warranty first and negotiate from there. Boats from 2018 on benefit from the post 2017 investment in the plant, and parts, gelcoat and dealer support are all readily available.
