About Tartan
Charlie Britton put Tartan on the water in 1960 by pairing Sparkman & Stephens with the builder Douglass & McLeod at Grand River, Ohio. The Tartan 27 came out of that: patterns and molds through the winter of 1960 to 1961, hull number one launched the following spring, and one of the most successful American cruising boats ever built. A fire took the Douglass & McLeod factory in 1971 and Britton bought what was left, which is when Tartan Marine proper began.
More than five thousand boats later the yard is at Painesville, Ohio, still building: epoxy hulls, carbon rigs as standard, and the Great Lakes construction standards that have always set the brand apart from the volume builders. Tartans sail well and are built heavier than their contemporaries, which is why forty-year-old ones are still cruising. On an older boat, ask about the deck core and whether the chainplates have ever been out.
