About Topaz
Topaz started at Swansboro, North Carolina in 1975 building plain, hard working sportfishermen for people who fished rather than entertained: big cockpit, big fish boxes, rigging station, a cabin with a V berth and a head and not much else. The range ran from the middle twenties to around 40 feet, with the 29 and 32 Sportfisherman, the 32 Express and the 37 the familiar ones. The 32 was reintroduced in 1999 on a much heavier laminate schedule to carry bigger diesels, and production later moved north to Berlin, New Jersey. EH Yachts bought the brand in 2005, the same group that gathered up Buddy Davis, Silverton, Predator and Ovation alongside Egg Harbor. Egg Harbor Group still lists Topaz among its brands, but no new Topaz is being built and everything trading under the name is used.
These sell to fishermen and they should. The accommodation is deliberately small and a family will be more comfortable in almost anything else of the same length, but the ride is the thing: a solid glass bottom about an inch thick over vinylester gives a Topaz the weight and the dry ride of a bigger boat, and that, plus a hull with a lot of bow flare, is the whole argument for one. Because the topsides and deck are balsa cored, the survey should be a moisture survey before it is anything else: every deck fitting, every rod holder, the transom and the cockpit sole. There is no factory support and no warranty behind these, but almost nothing on a Topaz is proprietary, and the common power, Caterpillar 3126 and C12 diesels, is still supported everywhere, which matters far more on a working fishing boat than a builder's parts desk would.
