About Hargrave
Hargrave began in 1957 as the design office of Jack Hargrave, one of the American naval architects who defined the look of the post-war motor yacht: his drawings went to Burger, Trumpy, Amels, Rybovich and Hatteras. After his death in 1996 the firm turned from designing other people's boats to building its own, under Michael Joyce from 1997, and has done so since.
The yachts are custom, roughly 80 to 150 feet, designed in Fort Lauderdale and built in Taiwan. Custom means what it says: no two are the same, so a Hargrave is valued on her specification and her refit history rather than on comparables. The office being in Fort Lauderdale matters to an owner: the people who drew her are twenty minutes from where she is kept.
What we know about Hargrave
Hargrave build dependable, deeply customisable semi custom motor yachts that give you a great deal of boat for the money. Founded by Jack Hargrave, one of the great American naval architects, and revived as a builder by Michael Joyce, and the respect in the industry is for the hulls first: performance and seakeeping before anything else.
Custom here means custom. Most semi custom yards offer you a choice of fabric and a choice of wood. Hargrave will move bulkheads, change headroom, rearrange the layout and change the number of staterooms. If you know how you intend to use a boat, that is worth more than any option list.
They are very good at interior volume. A 118 foot Hargrave gives you the space you would expect from a 130 foot custom build out of a more expensive European yard, and that difference is the value.
The part that tells you who designed it is the engine room. Standing headroom, often over seven feet, plumbing you could photograph, and walk around access to the Caterpillars. Anyone who has had to work on an engine lying down understands what that is worth over a decade of ownership.
